So, it has come to this. A proposed 2 a.m lockdown in the Valley precinct and glass bans in ‘risky’ venues.
The Queensland Government is trying to enforce a 2 a.m lock-out time for venues in the Valley, to stop drink related violence. This is the same reason for the ban on glassware.
This is a touchy subject, and rightfully so. People are dickheads, really, and when they get in touch with their alcoholic side, things can get out of hand. So, will shutting them out an hour earlier do anything to curb this behaviour?
Here are my reasons to resist the lock-out:
- Locking people out of venues an hour earlier will only mean that they will drink harder, better, faster, stronger. They will be more inebriated at an earlier time, and will spill out on to the streets in greater, more dangerous numbers.
- People love to drink. They will take shit from nasty bar tenders (ahem…rics and chalk), pay ridiculous amounts of money, and suffer the assault to the tastebuds that double blacks provide, just for some jelly in their legs. So, it won’t take them long to start going out earlier, and finishing earlier. I’m sorry to say it, but violence can’t read the time. It will come out to play whenever it feels like it.
- I don’t want to experience the Police State; the Sir Joh era; the Moonlight whatever…you get it. It’s a backward manouvre, QLD gov.
…and glass bans:
- People are inherently stupid, witless and mean: if you take a glass out of their hand they will simply form a fist wth it and cause just as much damage to that bloke over there who called them a poofter.
- This is yet another way in which all responsibility is being taken out of our hands. We are being turned into selfish, self-righteous, idiotic and irresponsible brats. I know people are being hurt by glassing, but hey, if we’re going this way, why not ban knives, saws, razors etc…to prevent further injury? The precedent is being set.
- Wake up, Qld Gov, having a glass in front of me does not make me violent. Being served alcohol should not equal violence. It is a culture which I have been brought up in, which suggests that alcohol is a secret elixir; a forbidden fruit. It has made me excited and thrilled to be drinking something so novel, and now I want to get as much as I can. Oh, and yeah, I’m a dumb shit, so I like to throw punches when I’m intoxicated.
So there.
If you believe in what I have written, re-post it, re-word it. Let people know that rules won’t fix the idiocy in this state.
Yours,
Yolande, frankly
